GAIR DUNLOP
Gair Dunlop was one of the key contributors to the art
and science panel discussion. He opened his talk with a critical overview
of the designer aesthetics when applied to the human body and then contextulised
his recent artistic research in the area of genetics by focusing on the work
featured in the Designer Bodies exhibition. Century 21 Calling, 2003-04 (Artists’
digital films, an artist’s book and mixed media installation. Running
time of video loops: 7 and 4 min).
Century
21 Calling. Dunlop’s installation, created
specifically for Stills ScreenLab, re-mixes events, concerns and media stories
with biographical fragments relating to Maurice Wilkins – one of the
three scientists awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of the double helix
structure of DNA in 1953.
Dunlop’s presentation echoes his views that "Even
the discovery of the DNA structure became a political football, seen as part
of a generalized triumph of the West in the same way as Abstract Expressionism
and the Cadillac". (In Four Plus: Writing
DNA Catalogue, 2003).
